TideWater Souper Supper Finished Bowls Part 2

So after spending days and days of throwing, slipping, and glazing oodles and oodles of bowls… I’ve finally unloaded the 2nd of 3 glaze kilns that I’m burning for the TideWater’s Souper Supper fundraiser. Here’s 6 bowls from the second kiln load.

This is a quick selection from the second kiln load of 40 bowls for this year’s TideWater’s Souper Supper fund raiser. I’m really happy; there are a lot of very nice pieces this year. I’ve only lost 3 bowls this time through. One more kiln load to open still. This last load is part of a kiln load up at the local community college’s gas kiln. Professor Joe Mariscal volunteered to donate kiln space for a community cone 10 gas firing in support of the project.
Thanks Joe!
It’s been cooling down for a few days; it’ll be ready to be opened first thing tomorrow morning. The anticipation is needling me.

2010 Souper Supper Bowls

The kids and I am putting together a few videos for this spring's 2010 TideWater Gallery "Souper Supper" event in February. I've been clued in that many of the people around here think that I just spit these bowls out for this event. This is the first video for this years event and unfortunately I don't think it communicates the amount of effort that goes into this project. I know this particular video might be a bit repetitive, but I think it does nicely begin to convey the pleasant monotony of throwing 120 bowls for an event like this. Wot!

Mental note... don't speed-up the next video... it looks cool, but it makes it look too fun.

TideWater Souper Supper Finished Bowls Part 1

So after spending days and days of throwing, slipping, and glazing oodles and oodles of bowls… I’ve finally unloaded the first of 3 glaze kilns that I’m burning for the TideWater’s Souper Supper fundraiser. Here’s 8 bowls from the first load of 50.

Tidewater Souper Supper Finished Bowls Part 3

I'm aiming to hit the hoop this week. This was the third and final kiln load of bowls for the TideWater Souper Supper. It was a gas firing hosted by Delta Community College’s ceramic’s department.

Thanks’ Joe!

It’s been a long time since I’ve had to put a good amount of faith into student glazes. Any questions that were asked about the suggested application or behavior of any of the glazes were met with shrugs.”Eh?” Guess that’s par for the course. Love a challenge though. Here are six of 30.

Souper Supper Bowls

Had a bit of a set-back this week… I opened up the basement door Monday morning to find 2” of water in my kiln room. I run an old electric Paragon so this kind of gave me a bit of pause. But that’s another story…

This post is just a few shots of some of the bowls that are in process for the TideWater’s Souper Supper in February. 3 of the galleries artists provided me with a taste of their art work that I could sample. I used the samples to create decals for firing onto the glazed surfaces of a bunch of this year’s bowls.
I'd like to take the oppertunity to give a special thanks to contributing TideWater artists, Sarah Lippincott, Denny Ah-Tye, and Gay Lynn Saunders. Thanks for your help! I really hope you like how they come out.
These are prefiring shots, they should be out of the kiln Monday afternoon.

Keep the bowl... support the Arts!

Studio Mates

I measure my success by the friends I make along the way...

This is a glory shot taken a few weekends ago by local award winning photographer Arturo Vera while he was shooting stills for this years Souper Supper fundraiser for the TideWater Art Gallery.

From left to right... It's Jessica Fong, me, and Tara Heinzen Danielson.
It's great to get to work with a crew who's smiles are all genuine.
Thanks you two!

Top of the Hill

When you climb the hill... you at least should stop long enough take the view from the top.

Thanks everybody for making this years "Souper Supper" a fantastic success!
Now it's time to run down the other side of the hill and get to work! Yes!

Souper Supper

Getting to handle work so different from my own always is a big treat. I'm still cleaning and reboxing up works in prep for the TideWater's SouperSupper Friday night.

Here's a look at a few more of Bruce Cadman's works for the event.

Low and slow.
The alchemy of the surface is gorgeous.

A Last Nod to the 2009 TideWater SuperSupper

As we pull into the last week and a half of finishing this years contribution of bowls for the TideWater's yearly Souper Supper, I feel the need for one last nod to last years' contributing ceramic artists. They produced over 200 works specifically for this event.

I wish everyone had a link that I could link to, but alas... it's a new age we live in.
Contributing ceramic artists for 2009's event last February were...
Bruce Cadman
Frank Sheldon
Glenda Burns
Helen Dollahite
Zygote
John Lechner
Linda Osborne
Steve Pate

Viva 2010!
See you there!

Beggars Bowls

Getting beggars bowls made for this year's TideWater Souper Supper.

These are small bowls that have been thrown slightly thick for easy handling when full.
This year, the event is giving me an opportunity to finally have a go at Jessica's hand cut footrings, and I love the results! It really helps contribute to the feeling of "swagger" I've been moving towards over the past few months.

TideWater Souper Supper

What do you say if the local gallery asks you to produce 250 bowls in 60 days? They’ll pay for the materials, the firing costs, provide floor space at their gallery to host a spring show, and even feed you at a fantastic gourmet soup feed surrounded by 250 local patrons of the arts.

I say “YES!”

Since 2002 I’ve been part of the stable of ceramicists that have helped contribute to this event. I’ve always looked forward to this event, being very happy to be just part of the background. It’s always been an amazing opportunity to explore and develop new ideas for surface designs and forms. It’s a project that’s never failed to propel me forward into a new year.
This year was something very new though… they asked me to recruit and organize the ceramic artists needed for this year’s event and I’ve found 10 amazing local ceramic artists to stand with me so far. With 27 days left, and over 200 plus pieces still in green ware, we’ll see how this all works out. You’ll be hearing more about this as the due date February 6th approaches.
Stay Tuned…

Souper Supper

One of 12 Agateware for this Friday's SouperSupper at the ScottishRite in Stockton.

Mitch Smith

Mitch is a local ceramic artist that provided one of last years favorite surprises for the Tidewater's Souper Supper.

This is a really fantastic handbuilt form and I'm happy that he's kind enough to revisit this design for this years event. Popular demand will see to it that his work gone really, really fast, so show up early.

A Much Needed Victory

I really needed this...
It's originally from this summer's gas firing, but was sadly underfired. Now all of it's bits got good and melty.

Tonight is being spent burning another full load of bowls for the TideWater's Souper Supper  and I'm hoping to get those out and the kiln reloaded with the next full load of bowls by tomorrow night. There's even a few question marks loaded in tonight's load!

Winter Bowling

Whew! I have a 10 day seasonal reprieve from my new job on the UOP grounds. High time to get a whole butt load of bowls into the pipe for this years Annual TideWater Souper Supper. As tradition has it... I'm using the opportunity to work a few ideas out to see what happens.

Impromptu Hiatus

I’ve been quietly running an impromptu to experiment the past 2 weeks. Maybe it’s the economy, maybe it’s the calm before the storm, and maybe it just is what it is… but it looked like not sitting down with a cuppa joe (or 3) at the computer and sharing what’s been happening out in the studio doesn’t help very much. (We’ll play a bit of catch-up this weekend.)

The reason for this hiatus was a happy one though.
My parents were in town from Iowa for a visit and we simply don’t get enough time to spend together. Mom and I did get to spend a bit of time out in the studio working on this year’s bowls for the TideWater Art Gallery’s “Souper Supper”. (70 or so bowls done… 50 to go.) This is her 3 year helping me put through a load and I’m thrilled to have her in the studio with me. It’s a fun way to get together for a few days and it really special to share time with her doing something I love to do...

Thanks Mom!
