Almost There

Four more bowls from the pile being packed into crates for the Supper Supper event... tonight's the night! After taking a 2 day family timeout to head down to Southern California, it's looking to be a blurr of activity.

Mitch Smith

Here is one of the joys of this bowls project... getting to collaborate with other artists just to see what happens. The jewel from last weeks reduction firing was from one of these collaborations... the piece is by local ceramic artist, Mitch Smith. He brought in 10 pieces of greenware to the studio and was brave enough to let us play with them and see what would happen.

The bottom half is glazed in a mystery Shino, the top and interior is OxBlood with a Colman Red over it.
Nice...
A few more pictures of Mitch's bowls are over at our sister site PortCityMud.

Running Towards the Flags

I'm in the final 4 days before the "Souper Supper" event. Boy, this project really tied-up my time over the past week and a half. Now I'll be playing catch-up for at least a week. The last 110 bowls was a marathon of glazing and firing using my trusty old Paragon for 2 loads of cone 6 firings and 1 load of cone 10 gas reduction. There were a good number of jewels and only a half dozen of duds so I'm going to chalk this one into the win column... Now it's time to sort and pack everything up.

A Last Nod to the 2009 TideWater SuperSupper

As we pull into the last week and a half of finishing this years contribution of bowls for the TideWater's yearly Souper Supper, I feel the need for one last nod to last years' contributing ceramic artists. They produced over 200 works specifically for this event.

I wish everyone had a link that I could link to, but alas... it's a new age we live in.
Contributing ceramic artists for 2009's event last February were...
Bruce Cadman
Frank Sheldon
Glenda Burns
Helen Dollahite
Zygote
John Lechner
Linda Osborne
Steve Pate

Viva 2010!
See you there!

Souper Supper Bowls

Had a bit of a set-back this week… I opened up the basement door Monday morning to find 2” of water in my kiln room. I run an old electric Paragon so this kind of gave me a bit of pause. But that’s another story…

This post is just a few shots of some of the bowls that are in process for the TideWater’s Souper Supper in February. 3 of the galleries artists provided me with a taste of their art work that I could sample. I used the samples to create decals for firing onto the glazed surfaces of a bunch of this year’s bowls.
I'd like to take the oppertunity to give a special thanks to contributing TideWater artists, Sarah Lippincott, Denny Ah-Tye, and Gay Lynn Saunders. Thanks for your help! I really hope you like how they come out.
These are prefiring shots, they should be out of the kiln Monday afternoon.

Tidewater Souper Supper Finished Bowls Part 3

I'm aiming to hit the hoop this week. This was the third and final kiln load of bowls for the TideWater Souper Supper. It was a gas firing hosted by Delta Community College’s ceramic’s department.

Thanks’ Joe!

It’s been a long time since I’ve had to put a good amount of faith into student glazes. Any questions that were asked about the suggested application or behavior of any of the glazes were met with shrugs.”Eh?” Guess that’s par for the course. Love a challenge though. Here are six of 30.

TideWater Souper Supper Finished Bowls Part 2

So after spending days and days of throwing, slipping, and glazing oodles and oodles of bowls… I’ve finally unloaded the 2nd of 3 glaze kilns that I’m burning for the TideWater’s Souper Supper fundraiser. Here’s 6 bowls from the second kiln load.

This is a quick selection from the second kiln load of 40 bowls for this year’s TideWater’s Souper Supper fund raiser. I’m really happy; there are a lot of very nice pieces this year. I’ve only lost 3 bowls this time through. One more kiln load to open still. This last load is part of a kiln load up at the local community college’s gas kiln. Professor Joe Mariscal volunteered to donate kiln space for a community cone 10 gas firing in support of the project.
Thanks Joe!
It’s been cooling down for a few days; it’ll be ready to be opened first thing tomorrow morning. The anticipation is needling me.

TideWater Souper Supper Finished Bowls Part 1

So after spending days and days of throwing, slipping, and glazing oodles and oodles of bowls… I’ve finally unloaded the first of 3 glaze kilns that I’m burning for the TideWater’s Souper Supper fundraiser. Here’s 8 bowls from the first load of 50.
